What Is a Burn Injury?

According to the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, a burn is any “tissue damage caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, sunlight, or nuclear radiation.” Burns can be minor, curable with some cold water and a few days, or severe, leading to shock, inflammation, swelling, and infection. Legally speaking, the term “burn injury” refers to the latter type.

Burns are also classified by degree, so when we say burn injuries, we are typically referring to second- and third-degree burns. That being said, first-degree burns can be serious when they affect a large area of skin.

If your burn injury is interfering with your everyday life, it’s time to call our Orange County burn injury lawyers.

Types of Burns

As we mentioned above, there are 3 main types of burn injuries.

First-degree burns affect the first layer of skin (the epidermis). They do not usually scar or get infected and typically heal within 3 to 5 days

Second-degree burns damage the epidermis and the layer underneath (the dermis). They are also called “partial-thickness burns,” and cause pain, redness, swelling, and blistering. Assuming the wound does not get infected, the skin will grow back on its own.

Third-degree burns or “full-thickness burns” are the most severe type of burns. They go through the epidermis and the dermis and damage or destroy the tissue underneath. The injured area can look charred and may appear black, white, or deep red in color. Because this type of burn can destroy nerves, the area is often numb. Third-degree burns do not heal by themselves, so most patients need a skin graft to replace damaged skin.

Sometimes, burns can destroy skin, fat, muscle, and even bone. These types of burns are sometimes called “fourth-degree burns,” but they may represent a more serious type of injury, like an amputation or limb-loss injury.

Another way burns are classified is with the "rule of nines. "This medical diagram estimates the total body surface area (TBSA) or the percent of the body that has been burned. In adults, arms are worth 9% each, the head and face is worth 10%, legs are worth 18% and the torso is worth 36% (see below).

If your burn is second-degree or above and/or covers a TBSA of more than 9%, you may need to seek medical attention. Once you are stable, our firm can help you pursue legal action.

What Causes Burn Injuries?

Burns can be caused by dry heat (fire), wet heat (steam and hot liquids), radiation, friction, hot objects, the sun, electricity, and dangerous chemicals, but thermal burns are the most common. Thermal burns are caused by heat, like fire, flames, scalds, and contact with a hot object.
