What Causes Spinal Cord Injuries?

Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of spinal cord injuries in the United States. Older people can also sustain spinal cord injuries in slip-and-fall accidents. Other causes of spinal cord injuries include violence and intentional torts, workplace accidents, and sports-related accidents and injuries.

As many as 450,000 people nationwide are living with a spinal cord injury, and about 17,000 new spinal cord injuries occur each year in the United States.

If you are living with a spinal cord injury because of someone else’s carelessness, our Orange County spinal cord injury lawyers can help.

How Spinal Cord Injuries Work

Your spinal cord is your body’s largest nerve, and it is responsible for carrying messages from your brain to the rest of your body. When your spinal cord is injured – typically by a sudden, traumatic blow to the spine – dislocated vertebrae, displaced bone fragments, and stray ligaments and disc material can tear into or bruise your spinal cord.

While the majority of spinal cord injuries do not completely sever the nerve, trauma can destroy axons, which are the extensions of nerve cells that make your spinal cord work as a neural pathway. When axons are damaged or destroyed, your spinal cord’s ability to communicate brain messages to your body is interrupted. As such, many spinal cord injuries result in partial or full paralysis.

Depending on what section of your spine is injured and how severe your spinal cord injury is, you could lose some function, all function, or make a complete recovery.

After a spinal cord injury, the nerves above the injury site usually continue working normally, but everything below your injury can be impacted.

Consequently, injuries to the cervical spine (vertebrae C1-C7) tend to be the most serious. Still, injuries to the thoracic spine (T1-T12), the lumbar spine (L1-L5), and the pelvis, sacrum, and coccyx (tailbone) can have devastating results.

Types of Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injuries can be complete or incomplete:

  • Complete spinal cord injuries cause permanent damage to the injured area and result in paraplegia, tetraplegia, or paralysis and loss of sensation below the injury site.
  • Incomplete spinal cord injuries occur when the spinal cord is only partially damaged and the patient’s ability to move and feel depends largely on their health and medical history.

Spinal cord injuries are also classified according to the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) grading scale. ASIA A injuries are complete spinal cord injuries, ASIA B-D injuries are incomplete spinal cord injuries, and ASIA E injuries indicate a full recovery.

Any type of spinal cord injury will require intensive emergency care and rehabilitative services. You may also need many medical and care-related resources to address your newfound needs and limitations.

Our results-driven lawyers will work hard to help you afford the medical access you need.

Why File a Lawsuit?

At Sachs Law, APC, we understand that no amount of money will change what happened to you, but we also acknowledge the financial realities that come with a spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injuries qualify as catastrophic injuries because they interrupt your ability to maintain gainful employment. When your spinal cord is damaged, you will not only face expensive medical bills, but you will also have to take time off work, and you may never be able to work again.

On top of this, you will likely need extra care and assistance and even devices to help you with mobility, like wheelchairs, braces, and crutches.

If you did not cause your accident and/or injuries, you should not be responsible for these costs.

Don’t suffer in silence, instead…
